hmm love to learn marathi but got transferred from chennai to pattukkottai.
ReplyDelete..some words have changed...oma is ovaa , here;vela is velchi here;valaa khobra is also called suka khobre;tambdi mirchi is also called laal mirchi;cashew is kajoo,here;bibaa is another fruit,similar to cashew...semecarpus anacardium...it is used to mark the clothes by dhobees,washermen of india....but strangely,goans also call cashew as bibbo...

ReplyDeleteMohiree in TM refers to a drain. So amongst us care is taken pronounce Mohre(n) for mustard seeds.

Mohiree is actually pronouced as Moree. it means sink of the kitchen or drainage of the basin.

mohiree/sasam/sansvan/sarson/its all mustard seeds....moree is a bathroom/wash room/place...drain...but these two words are pronounced separately...no mistakes done...
ReplyDeleteI am TMD as you describe, but have not developed such a strong sense of linguistic or historical identity. Of course, we are highly educated but the younger generation prefers the regional language to Marathi. For the past 150 years no one could even read or write Modi and even my mother's grand mother preferred to read Telugu or Kananada. Now the shift is to Tamil. I think it is a matter of time before this community becomes extinct.

I am a MoDi Expert based in Mumbai and ranks no.1 in the country with respect to MoDi lipi. I try to stay connected with TMs and insist on talking and writing in Marathi. I wish to teach MoDi to TMs, but I also need the 'will to learn' from TMs. For you all, I have today initiated a TM group on facebook as well. See...I appear more concerned for TMs, than TMs themselves :)

I shall give you the names we use here,singular and plural...also another word/s used for the same...in that rder ! we use the word draksh,sing drakshe ,plural for grapes only. for dried grapes=resins,we say manukaa/ bedaanne..Ravaa=ravaa..and the adj. ravaal is used to describe anything which is like rava ..little rough..unlike peethh=powder.baddam,piste,jardaloo,akrod,bedaanne=also resins,cajoo,are all dry fruits-sukaa mewaa.tamaal patri is a leaf one adds for fragrance.

I have a doubt... how do you say, "The salt is little less in the food" in marathi.
I use the tamil word "Kammi" in place of "less" and say, "Jevnantha Thoda meeth kammi ahe"
Dear Prakash,kami is used v much here in today`s Marathi...it is also used in Hindi as kam...Gujarathi,Punjabi...if you at all want an old Marathi word ,also used here...use Unne...unne is minus in math..to substract.one may also use nyun or nich...for less salt you may use a better word Allnni...and too much of salt kharat...

Grocery in Maharashtra is called किराणा माल.
'kammi' may be a word in Tamil. However, it is originally a Prakrut word. This word has infact travelled from Prakrit to Tamil. Marathi has evolved from Prakrut. This word in Marathi is कमी. In Hindi, Gujrati, Rajasthani, Punjabi, Bengali it is कम. कमी comes from the word कमतर्ता meaning 'deficiency'.
ReplyDeleteIn Maharashtra, उणे means 'lack of'& वजा means 'minus' ; आळणी means 'bland' or 'without salt'.
मोरी means Sinkage & मोहरी means Mustard.
I suppose TMD probably adopted the word rava from Tamil word rava. Not the other way round
