ReplyDeleteVand or Vund is referred to a insect with a hard tough body, usually black. This could be Tamil origin.

Dear Pratibha and dear readers,...going through your vocabulary one realizes that most of the words are similar ; although over the years there has been some variation in pronunciation ...but a few are Greek to me as they seem to be of the Tamil/Telugu origin.Nevertheless I shall keep posting the words we use here in Maharashtra,today. But I`ll like to clarify here that in present Maharashtra also ,we have a lot of difference as we have about 18/19 dialects...and five distinct zones ...viz. Konkan,Desh [ this region is from where your community derives the name Deshastha ! This is the region on the eastern side of the Sahyadri mountain...mainly Pune,Satara,Kolhapur,Sangali,Solapur,Nagar and Nasik districts .The Konkan has Thane,Mumbai,Ralgadh[ Kulaba],Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts.It is on the western side of the Sahyadri..touching Arabian sea.Then we have Khandesh [ Kanha`s desh,Lord Krishna`s];We also have Marathwada in the centre and further east is Vidarbha or Warhad with Nagpur as its headquarters .All these regions have more than one dialect of Marathi .and hence the difference !we also have people who migrated in the 17th/18th century to Gujrat,Madhya Pradesh,Tanjavur and Karnataka...also Mauritious !
ReplyDeleteBaramer is actually sanskrit /Marathi Bhramar ; also called Bhungaa here.the word bhovaraa used for revolving TOY that we played as children with a string to revolve and set it in action / motion.Bhovaraa has been derived from Bhramar.

ReplyDeleteProbably, some words have originated from Tamil and Telugu and strangely sometimes we wonder if some Tamil words were picked up from our Marathi. THough Tamil is one of the oldest languages known.
ReplyDeleteFor instance, the word, "Maadivar" (Upstairs) We always thought 'maadi' is a Tamil word and it is used even today in tamil. We assumed that the suffix 'var' was added to a Tamil word. However, I hear that 'maadivar' is used in Standard Marathi. Correct me , sir if I am wrong.
Of course we have the ' vaangi bhath' and ' Rassa Vangi" being adopted by Tamil and Kannada.
regarding maadivar...maadee in Marathi is upper floor ...also called varchaa majlaa...maaj ghar or maj laa has been derived from skt madhya...middle...but according to me,maadee must have come from maad palm..coconut...as it is v high/tall...nevertheless I shall find out the root of it soon and post it here...but it cd be the apabhransh = a corruption of a skt word madhya= middle as this maadee is a portion between the ground floor and the roof...var is a Marathi word from skt upar...upper[E]...
ReplyDeleteMaadee in marathi has come from maallee in old marathi...today...we say,varchaa maallaa...this maallaa is diff from maalaa=garland. in goa konkani,maallee is used for maadee,even today.I believe ,it must have some relation with a maalaa=garland,as the flowers are arranged one below/above the other.Similarly,the floore are one above/below the other.I do not think it has come from Tamil...it could be a mere co incidence.Because this word is also used in the n.Indian languages...but manzil is not Indian..it is an import by invading muslims...also ,now ,I think ,it has no relation with MAAD a coconut palm..as I earlier believed...
