Rarely Used/ Some Forgotten Thanjavur Marathi Words and Phrases

Even though these words are frequently used by many TMDs ,  I rarely hear these words from the younger and upcoming generation. English is used for all these words and slowly our language is getting dissolved. How many times do we really use 'KHOLI' when talking to our kids. Most of the time we say  'ROOM'! ot "kamra"

It is true that TMDs living in TamilNadu are still able to maintain and preserve our Marathi but those outside Tamil Nadu , even Bangalore slowly begin to use the local terms! Therefore I address these common words as Rarely Used. By Rarely Used I mean outside of our mainland, Tamil Nadu!

  1. 'Saavli', as used in my home means shade. 'Saavli pathis chaalumana' means 'lets walk on the side of the shade'.

  2. Yes, true. 'saavli' is used for 'shade'. However, I have heard it a lot being used to describe complexion.

Both the above comments are right.but the source differs and hence the meanings.Saavli=shade-this word is derived from sanskrit word CHHAYAA.the second saavli used to denote colour-a dark complexion, has come from skt.SHAMAL,that is why, lord krishna is called SHAAM/SHYAM;as he was dark.

KHOLI is a room, and this word is used.Maaku ghalane is actually maakhanne.this verb means-to smear/to daub/to anoint/to rub over with unctuous matter.e.g.the children playing in mud during rains,"pore chikhlaat maakhlet." =the children are drenched in mud[full of mud].Bahusha is used in literature.Akasmaat is used .Yatheshta is skt.Yatha+ishta, but is used v.rarely.Nissng is used to praise/to dispraise, both.but this word actually means,detached/free from all ties/without partners/alone/ ,mostly used for saadhoos. But if one uses Nissangall, means ,if one attaches ll,then it means= shameless.Kaathaad is kaatde=skin.kaat/kaatdee/twacha/chamdee are also ,skin.varvantaa is a rolling stone used to grind and one beneath is PAATAA.-the flat stone,on which one keeps anything to be ground.Ghoos is bandikoot and this word is used.
