NARVATTI
नरवट्टी
Meaning: COCONUT SHELL
A coconut shell was called Narvatti.
In ancient times this had several uses...
1) Was used as a cup
2) To serve salt.
3) Was used as a ladle with a wood handle fixed, to serve Dahi/curds
EK NAADI
एक नाडी
Meaning: ONE MINUTE
SEEVAN
सिवण
Meaning: STITCHES
TO STITCH would be SIVAN GHALE सिवण घाले
KUNAAVNA
कुनाव्णा
Meaning: TO GESTURE OR SIGNAL
The few below are still used by some people and have not been forgotten as much.
PHANI
फणी
Meaning: COMB
VINCHARA
विंचर
Meaning: TO COMB (verb)
It is odd that the hair brush or comb is called 'Phani' and the act of combing called something totally different sounding as in 'vinchara'.
DAVA HAATH
डवा हाथ
Meaning: LEFT HAND
Similarly DAVA PATEES डवा पटीस would mean LEFT SIDE (PATEES meaning SIDE)
UJVA HAATH
उजवा हाथ
Meaning: RIGHT HAND
UJVA PATEES उजवा पटीस is RIGHT SIDE

ReplyDeleteBut some words used by my Aji in my childhood seemed very archaic to us and provoked a laughter in us.Like Dikkoli Poda डिक्कॊळि पॊद(Break the rice lump in your plate) Beth Kaada भॆथ काड( Pick up the Bamboo stick) Kapda Doova कप्दा ढूव( wash clothes).
Narvatti is a combi.of two words.Nar+vatti.Nar means a man and also short of naaral-coconut.and vatti has come from KAVATEE-a human SKULL.std mar.we call it KARVANTEE or KARATEE.it resembles,a human skull in half.a mischivous,naughty boy is called KAARTYAA-a derogatory word.NAADEE literally means a pulse in english.-a very short time.also,kshann is used-a time measure.sivann is shivann,here.a tailor was called SHIVAMPEE-on who shivs.today,it is SHIMPEE.kunaavn-nna is KHUNNAVNNE-to signal.fanee/kangwaa is a comb.also called DANTONNI in konkanni-daant= dentals=teeth.Vicharnne==to comb.valavnne is also used= literally to turn/divert.DDAAvaa=left.UJVAA=right.
ReplyDeletedikkoli is dhekull,a lump of anything.like a lump of mud.also called HENDDAA.PODA FODD,to break.BET is vet.a small bamboo.we use bet,for making chairs,furniture.it is a kind of a bamboo.in olden days,there was a song-" chhadi laage chham chham, vidyaa yeee gham gham.this vetaachi stick was used by pantojees-now gurujees or masters,to punish the students.now,banned.KALLAK/KANNAK is also small bamboo,different from vet.this is used for the roof of the houses,on top of which,the tiles were laid.kapda doova is kapdaa-singular,kapde-plural,DHOONNE=to wash.and hence a DHOBEE,washerman.its a hindi word.we say PARITT.
