With the predominance of English and with more and more TMDs migrating out of Thanjavur and surrounding areas, intermarriages and with the younger generation speaking more of the local language, Thanjavur Marathi so well preserved in spite of a cultural onslaught of Tamil is being less and less spoken. Even as I write this, I can recall so many words which my grandmother used and we don't use at all.
So here is a post on Forgotten Thanjavur Marathi words.....
Readers, please contribute words from your own memory and let us rekindle this language into a spoken recognized one!

rubgund- grinding stone
ReplyDeleteYes, Thank you. Rubgund is indeed one obsolete TMD word along with 'Varavanta' ..a smaller grinding stone! All replaced by Mixers and blenders!
ReplyDeleterubgund reminds me of mirgund!
ReplyDeletenot sure what exactly it means, but i guesss its peppercorns. its also used in the context of a crawling/rolling baby- tho/thina mirgund! heta-tatha loolatha hai!
Wow! that's a new one... a Marathi Simile!Rolling like a peppercorn!
ReplyDeleteHeard of Godum Paani?
ReplyDeleteActually, for pillow-cover, we say "usicha oray" and not "ghusan"
ReplyDeleteUseecha gousana is the correct TM word . Oray is a Tamil word .
Deleterubgund-gund in kannada is a round stone.this grinding stone was a very essential tool in an old kitchen.it is called RAGDAA-ragadnne=to grind.this tool is a round stone appx.22/24 inches high ,with a 7/8 inches hole in the centre.lady puts her udid/urad or whatever she wants to grind, sits on a stool, adds some water and with a help of a long round stone, grinds.another tool is paataa-a stone slab, about 20 inches x24 inches.she places waatann[whatever she wants to grind],and with the help of varavantaa[long and round stone]grinds.mixers and grinders have burried these tools.
ReplyDeleteAt my in-laws and my dad who grew up with his grandparents agrees, the word for mattress is 'nahili'; 'anturna' refers to the spread-out mattress that becomes a bed.
ReplyDeleteA forgotten word for a measure- 'kolaga', with the strong twisted 'la'. Dad teased me for my huge mug of tea, saying 'hey kaaya, kolaga bhar peethis ka!'
ReplyDeleteI'll find out what quantity it is and post again.
In fact kolaga is a measuring item made usually of steel used for measuring paddy, rice, etc . In Tamil it is known as மறக்கால் (marakkal). When somebody consumes more food in Marathi they say kolaga kolaga jevtho.
DeleteMirgundi is actually mirgond = cluster of black pepper,or green bud of black pepper;also when pepper is covered by udid/urad dough and fried ,it is called mirgund or mirgond or mirghata...but there is another word in kannad muruku means to turn/roll or to contract.ushiche ghushan has come from gavasni =to cover.nihalli is not used here .we use gaadee for a bed ..also the verb anthar = to spread..the gaadee roll.panghrunn is cover also called chaadar.its a farsi word .Kollgaa is a kannad word in Marathi..also gindal in canaras.
ReplyDeletevalani-rope where the washed clothes will be put to dry
ReplyDeletekoli-room
nadvee-varandhah,angaan-muttram[tamil]
champa-mat
Thank you, Readers.
ReplyDelete@Anonymous.. Yes...I had forgotten "nadvi" for verandeh or passageway.
Have not heard 'valani' being used. Probably from "vaalna' (drying) ...
@Mangesh SirDeshpande,, We are not familiar with 'mirgond' no idea, why! Interesting to know 'muruku' is a Kannada original. We always thought it was Tamil...thats where the Tamil snack " Murruku' (Marathi..CHAKLI) was born.
Before the invasion of the famous "mixie" we all had 'rubgund' and 'varavantas' in my mom's kitchen.
vasaada - rain sprinkle from outside comin in.
ReplyDeletecharaant - rope
Rubgunda is a grinder usually made of granite with a pit in the centre where wet grains are put and ground with the help of a grinding stone .
DeleteAnother item is paataa varavantaa usually made of a flat granite stone for grinding chutny , etc . with the help of a granite roller .
It is Osaade which means rain water sprinkles coming in due to wind.
