Gharosa / घरोसा .. Cobweb
कोनांत घरोसा बांधू गेला आहे ... There are cobwebs in the corner
Komat / कोमट ... Lukewarm
Himaala/ हिमाला ...Cold Weather/Winter
हिमालांथ कोमट पाणी पिणा चकोट... It is good to drink lukewarm water during winter.
Dhirda/ धिरड .. Dosa
Sarvasadharan/ सर्वसाधारण .. Ordinary
घर बांधना काहीं सर्वसाधारण काम नोहो... Building a house is not an ordinary job!
Khede Gaanv/ खेडे गांव ...Village
त्हीना खेडे गांवान्त्सू आली आहे .. She has come from a village.
Anthakarna / अन्थकर्ण.. Affection
थीला सावत्र लोन्कावर काहीं अन्थाकर्ण नाहीं... She has no affection for her stepson.
Ek Haath/ एक हाथ... Measurement for One Cubit
Gaj/ गज...for yard measurement
नौ गजाच लुगडा ...Nine yards Saree

ReplyDeletehimaalaa,is hivaalaa in today`s marathi.unhaallaa is summer.pavsaallaa is a rainy season.dhirada is somewhat like a dossai.and idlee was known as sandann.this word sandann is still used in goa as sanna.it is also used in the canaras.but in modern marathi it is replaced by idlee.ghrosaa,komat,khede ganv are in use,here.antahkarna is also used,sometimes.insted of gaj,vaar is used for one yardi.e.36 inches.e.g.9 vaarachie lugde.9 yards saree.haat is also used in villages for approx.20 inches long.also VAAV is used;vaav is the distance between ,when one streches both the arms out,the distance between the out streched points.its approx.4 feet.the measurement of ek purush,don purush ,teen purush is used,to denote the depth of water in the well.one purush is approx.6 feet.but vaav,purush is used only in the villages.our grammen viilagers have kept the old marathi ALIVE.
ReplyDeleteEvery time I come across an old Marathi word,I remember ,the days/years,I spent in my village,of which,we were JAMINDAARs/INAAMDAARS [the term is slightly jr.to the JAHAGIRDAAR].I also spent 7 years in GOA for my school education,where I heard,many many old Marathi words almost lost in SM.then my association with Konkan/and canaras[Karwaar,Mangalore],and further south to Cochi,added to my vocabulary of OLD MARATHI.All these nice folks have preserved our old words,like FORT KNOX/BANK OF ENGLAND/RESERVE BANK OF INDIA;The last but not the least,MAURICE and TANJAVUR.Plus my library of old books ,I bought from the pavements of Mumbai/Pune/and other places.My family also had a lot of books from the 19th century.e.g.the first book of Marathi grammar printed on stone press by late Dadojee Pandurang-1833.The great John Wilson`s The Indian Castes-2 volumes in English,1865.Geirson`s volumes on `The linguistic survey of India,1908 to 1918.The v.first book of engineering,published by the v,first eng.college of Asia.1963.Does anyone know ,which one ?

por m.f.n. genger, porgaa m...porgee f. also portaa in anger, portee in anger.Aangthanna is also called aanglatt = built.AANG=body.the word AAngee= a shirt.besh is still used only in the villages.but as BES.nothing to do with English best !there is a mistake in typing the year of the first engg college in Asia. its 1863 A.D. it is at ROORKEE in the United Province..U.P.
